Style Inspiration of the Moment: Nina Hagen

Yes! Nina, the mother of European punk! Or at least the mother of Continental Europe's punk, since the scene in the UK is different. If you Yankees don't know Nina - shame on you!
Nina was born in 1955 in East-Berlin, Germany. She was a singer-songwriter in many little political bands, but in the year 1976 she left the country. She travelled to London and quickly got into the punk rock movement. Back in Germany, in West-Berlin, Nina formed the Nina Hagen Band - and the rest is history. She has then released 15 albums, and she still is highly respected. In the 80s she got very much into gothic rock, Hare Krishna, animal rights - her music isn't all punk anymore, but it's still awesome.

For me, Nina is one of the most inspiring people ever. Her style (both in music and in looks) has varied from angry punk to lovely new wave graziness, from gothic-y to this mystical hippie-krishna-indian thing. Her voice & songwriting is great. She's best friends with Lene Lovich. She supports PETA & the human rights. She just rocks, still at the age of 54.

^ that must be my favourite interview ever!
